Should Christians attend a same sex wedding?

We Are Reformed

Attending a same-sex wedding poses significant theological concerns. Scripture is unequivocal in its teaching that marriage is ordained by God as a covenantal union between one man and one woman. Genesis 2:24 establishes this foundational design, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Jesus Himself reaffirms this in Matthew 19:4-6, emphasizing the divine nature of marriage.

To attend a same-sex wedding can be perceived as condoning or celebrating a union that contradicts God’s revealed will. Ephesians 5:11 commands believers, “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” Participation in or support of what the Bible describes as sin (e.g., Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10) would conflict with this directive. Moreover, 2 John 1:10-11 warns against even appearing to share in or endorse false teachings, which could apply here.

While believers are called to love all people, including those in same-sex relationships, this love must be expressed in truth (Ephesians 4:15). Supporting or celebrating what God has defined as sinful behavior does not align with biblical love, which seeks the eternal good of others by pointing them to Christ and His truth.

For these reasons, it would not be biblically permissible to attend a same-sex wedding, as it compromises the witness of God’s holiness and the integrity of His Word.
